I know this is an old article, but I just stumbled across it today. While I am cognizant of the remarks about stereotyping posted above by Jeff, I would like to mention the piece done by 20/20 earlier this year (2007) on giving to the poor. I hope I’m remembering the statistic correctly; the reader can look it up online, I suppose. They found that statistically, conservatives give more, far more to the poor than liberals. I’m thinking the statistic was something like 4 times more. The reason given for this was that those who believe government should be responsible for social injustice through the redistribution of taxes (i.e., liberals) are less likely to give than those who believe that individuals carry personal responsibility for social injustice (conservatives). On 20/20, they tested the statistic and found that it was true. This would seem to hurt the root hypothesis for this article.
