In 1979 the soviets invaded Afghanistan on intelligence failures. That Afghanistan had become a threat.
Around 1986 the Soviets wanted to end their Afghan War and tried some of the same approaches that we have tried or talked about: a policy of “national reconciliation”, as one.
Many Soviets just wanted to cut their loss and pull out. But other officials raised counterarguments that may sound familiar.
They were;
-If we simply pull out, we’ll destroy our influence around the world for a generation. And if we leave, the country will fall apart, and there’ll be a bloodbath focusing on our friends. Muslim extremists will come to power, and it’s better to fight them over there than to fight on our side of the border.-
Eerily familiar…………………
After 9 yrs of war the Soviets did pull out. Afghanistan eventually did collapse into civil war that was a blood bath.

What a lesson this show was for all your listeners. Mike Lane must be the poster child of republican ideology and showed us perfectly how Republicans deal with the subject of war.
The callousness of the republican mind in the face of human suffering and the Iraq refugee problem, plus the absolute ignorance of what really goes on in the non-neocon world are absolutely astounding. On second thought, we shouldn’t really be surprised because this happens when you confuse the task of running a democratic country with the running of a transnational corporation.
