Why March? — Four Civil Rights Bills

October 14, 2009

Mark is on the Leslie Marshall show today talking about the Gay Rights March and Congressman Barney Frank’s comment that “the only thing the marchers are putting pressure on is the grass.”
We march to approve four laws:  to work, to marry, to serve our country, and to be free from violence.  These are conservative, mainstream American values…if conservatives only weren’t too bigoted to see that.

Could nature have provided a better symbol of our fervent but still unrealized hopes and dreams?

    Human to Human
It’s a classic case of boy meets lesbian,
    wondering if he can do
    what a female lover can,
    and still on appropriate cue,
    do what a man can,
is it just a fool’s due
    for such emotional investigation,
or is there a spiritual manifestation
    that compassioned angels understand,
    through life’s tragedies
    stares brave beauty
    that reverent eyes see,
    enjoying a transcendent view
    mirroring shamelessly,
in her song is her soul
    that he communes with, silently,
    listening for a while, timelessly,
    knowing unconsciously
    the basis of his attraction
    is simply deeply
    human-to-human.

Yes, and the only alternative is for him to say, “hey, you fraidycats. Just write the bill and I will sign it. It’s not rocket science. I won’t give you an excuse not to write it.”

I agree Obama needs Congress. There’s very little he can do by executive order.

Mark, Obama is being diplomatic here. He could, with an executive order, end this, but then Congress would weasel out of acting, and the next Republican President will undo the order.
Obama made it clear that he would not rule by executive fiat. He said to “make him do these things.” If Congress drafts it, he will sign it. that’s the way it should be.
In our country, Presidents change things by signing bills. Anything else is bushlike.
