Mark v. Dubya (Part II) and Kansas v. Science (Part II)

May 5, 2005

(broadcast stream) (.mp3 download)
A further dissection of that rare event, the Presidential news conference. Mark tells you what the President is saying…and what he’s NOT saying.
PLUS a report from the Second Scopes Monkey Trial. A political panel of Kansas non-scientists has put evolution on trial in the classic battle of whether the Government may establish Religion in place of scientific truth. The scientists refuse to participate in the “show trial.”
Guest: David Burress(Email: adastrainstitute(at)sbcglobal.net), Founding Member of Kansas Citizens for Sound Science and Founder of the Ad Astra Institute, a new think tank that studies the rhetoric of the radical right takeover in Kansas and progressive responses.
Here’s a fascinating article about the trial, including the surprising link between Kansas creationists and a Turkish cult/terrorist group
Another article in today’s Washington Post about the controversy: Teachers, Scientists Vow to Fight Challenge to Evolution where the theory of evolution, it is pointed out, has no greater or lesser scinetific truth than two other interesting (but yet unproven?) scientific theories: gravity and electricity.
And finally an article on dinosaur remains which raises a question to which I do not know the creationist answer. Since dinosaurs aren’t mentioned in the Bible and are carbon-dated to be more than 10,000 years old, aren’t these remains in and of themselves proof that the story of Genesis 1 should not be taken literally? Was the Earth really formed three days before the Sun? (And if so, how did they calculate the “day”?)

    Now we all understand.

Those of us who know truth have a big advantage. The minister in my church has explained it all to us. Everyone who does not agree with what we believe is going to end up in hell. Because we know truth anything that does not agree is wrong. Our belief is based on science and therefore it should be tought everywhere and those who don’t agree should move to to another country. And some of you have the arogance to say that we want to impose our views on all others. It’s not “our views” it’ the proven truth

    Pointman
    Trying to negotiate the Universe,
    stepping stones along the way,
    one move after the other,
sometimes three steps the other way.
Lost the compass years ago, but
an invisible azimuth guides the heart.
    Reason is no reason
    for a right-of-way,
    of course,
    it just leads astray
    to empty places,
    black holes sucking energy
    with glitzy, artificially lighted facades.
    Drawn to inner radiance of
    a message of light,
    souls magnetically gather
    upon a huge rock
    flat, with soft, green grass
    spreading atop;
    and tarry,
    sharing the silence,
    carrying the soft whisper
    that unifies faith, reminding all
    of the One
    who has already walked point.

    Skip,
Do you think any people with a religious belief are cultic?
If not, what is your criteria for slapping on the “cult” label?
You might want to know the differences before making such an assinine statement.
“To Him, be glory and dominion forever and ever, amen.”

With absolutely no proof or reason, Churchmouse denies that a bacteria’s developement of drug resistance is proof of evolution. I guess that germ that can now survive in Clorox was created that way 6000 years ago. What did that poor little germ do without it’s Clorox all these years?
Religious belief systems require no proof, just a lot of hell and damnation fear. These Dominionists are determined to drag us back several centuries. Here we come Salem Witch trials.
Give it up you rational people. You are essentially trying to deprogram cult members. Have a conversation with a former Moonie or Scientologist and you will see many parallels.
