You are right, Mark. I was a little skeptical of your description at first, but after listening to the show, Joan really is an expert on this issue. She has great insights into which education problems in this country really need our attention. We’d be lucky to have her on the school board in my community. I also appreciate her top tips on finding a good school. Those were very helpful. Good show!

Ya know what Mark? Sometimes people (teachers) get hired because of who they know. Things like nepotism, schmoozing etc etc. You know what I mean.
Then there’s the tenure issue; once they’re in, it’s extremely difficult to get them out.
Salaries? Our teachers are well paid when compared with the salaries of other professionals in our area.
I bet you don’t support the idea of school vouchers do you? Public schools are losing students to the private schools and not always “religious” private schools either.
Our local elementary school has a lot of good teachers; mainly it’s our middle and high schools that seem to give us grief.
