Jail the Coal Company Execs!

April 7, 2010

Mark is on the Leslie Marshall Show today. Here’s his thoughts on the coal-mining “accident”:
“When a drunk driver kills someone, we put the driver in jail. But when a coal company intentionally violates safety regulations and kills twenty-five miners, we slap them on the wrist. It’s time to put Massey’s entire corporate board in jail. Do it just once and you know what? I doubt we’ll see many ‘coal murders’ in the future. I realize the twenty-five people were poor miners — mere human beings and therefore far lesser citizens than mulitnational corporations, the ‘persons’ that Republicans fetishize as ‘We the People.’ But, and call me crazy here, I think a human life is valuable, even if it’s neither corporation nor fetus. And until we punish corporate murder by jailing those that commit it — the people hiding behind the corporate shield — we can expect these corporate crime waves to continue to mow down innocent lives.”

    a is a,
Please paste your post on the Arizona immigration law on that part of the blog. And we can continue the discussion there.
I have not bent the truth one iota. Read the law. You’ll see that I’m right. In fact, the law’s even been modified to fix the problems I’ve complained about: racial profiling and allowing police officers to check the papers of people who have not done anything wrong (“legal contact,” not “legal stop”).
I doubt you’ll respond to this, however. Like most of my critics, you don’t care about the truth. You just want to rail on me because you can’t handle the truth. I would respect a conservative who could actually use facts to justify their opinion rather than just inane insults. Unfortunately such conservatives are rare. When people know the facts, they often become liberals instead.

    Mr. Levine,
I am constantly and thoroughly amazed at your double talk and ability to be on the wrong side of every issue. I suggest that the next time you use or hear “Tea Party hate mongers”, think about your willingness to bend the truth about Arizona’s immigration law.
If you and other liberals are not fommenting hate and class envy, then no one is.

Just like a good laawya. sue sue sue! Hey Mark did you ever think of asking Obama to regulate big coal since he’s regulating everything as it is?
Woops, Obama probably won’t do that since he’s in bed with that industry too.

We need to change the law.
    That’s my point.

Mark, it’s a great idea, but is it feasible? Aren’t corporate board members protected by limited liability?
Has there ever been a case where a board member of a corporation was jailed because of activities the board member had the corporation did? (Not just the money the person made from, say, insider trading?)
