Kerry's 1971 Senate Testimony

August 25, 2004

(archived broadcast )

OK. OK. I know you think I’m beating a dead horse. But there’s one more element to Kerry’s post-Vietnam war activity that we have not yet covered: his 1971 testimony where he asked the dramatic question, “How can you ask someone to be the last man to die for a mistake?”
This testimony has already been taken out of context by Kerry’s opponents, so as usual, we will play as much of it unedited as exists, including the entire 20 minute speech and some 10 minutes of questioning which, I believe, is all that is extant. (If I’m wrong, please let me know.)
It’s interesting history and fascinating insight into the mind of the man who I suspect and hope will be our next President. To those who wonder about Kerry’s position on Iraq or whether he would lead our troops needlessly into war, I believe this tape is powerful evidence.
And I guarantee you it will be cited out of its historical context by Kerry’s opponents from now until Election Day. So this way you can hear it in context first and surprise your conservative friends who try to twist it….
Finally, I think Kerry’s decision to go public with some of the atrocities our troops committed in Vietnam provides an interesting foil to the abuses that have now come to light at Abu Gharib prison…abuses at the highest levels…
With my commentary and your blog entries and calls as usual……

Hey Jim–say somethun–you’re only bored because you’re boring–there’s nothing boring about PTSD–it’s about adrenalin rush
Careful you don’t swallow a fly when you yawn–there are some people who know life is not a joke and not a lazy man’s gimme
You think 58,000 KIA’s is amusing–and 58,000 suicides after the fact is boring (yeah right)–well, perhaps you will choke on a peanut turn purple–and no one will care
