#MeToo

October 26, 2017
Comment

In this very personal hour, I detail my own experiences with violence against women, through a family tragedy that affects my personal and professional life to this day.
About 20 years ago, my sister was murdered by her husband. After years of perseverance and dedication to justice, her killer was finally brought before a court of US law.
Although I can never have my sister back, her loss provided inspiration for laws I helped pass in Virginia to help victims of domestic violence, and helped to build and maintain better facilities to help victims in crisis.

GOP Cracks in the Wall of Trumpism

October 25, 2017
Comment

I discuss GOP Senator Jeff Flake’s Senate speech where he repudiates Trump and Trumpism in the strongest terms yet that we’ve heard from a sitting Republican.
Here are some of the lines from his speech.
Republican Senator Jeff Flake (AZ) announces retirement with fiery speech denouncing Trump and Trumpism. Here are just some of the quotes:
“Reckless, outrageous, and undignified behavior has become excused and countenanced as “telling it like it is,” when it is actually just reckless, outrageous, and undignified.
And when such behavior emanates from the top of our government, it is something else: It is dangerous to a democracy. Such behavior does not project strength – because our strength comes from our values. It instead projects a corruption of the spirit, and weakness.
It is often said that children are watching. Well, they are. And what are we going to do about that? When the next generation asks us, Why didn’t you do something? Why didn’t you speak up? — what are we going to say?
Mr. President, I rise today to say: Enough. We must dedicate ourselves to making sure that the anomalous never becomes normal. With respect and humility, I must say that we have fooled ourselves for long enough that a pivot to governing is right around the corner, a return to civility and stability right behind it. We know better than that. By now, we all know better than that.”
“The notion that one should stay silent as the norms and values that keep America strong are undermined and as the alliances and agreements that ensure the stability of the entire world are routinely threatened by the level of thought that goes into 140 characters – the notion that one should say and do nothing in the face of such mercurial behavior is ahistoric and, I believe, profoundly misguided.”
“I have children and grandchildren to answer to, and so, Mr. President, I will not be complicit.”

Is Nothing Sacred?

I discuss the ironic comments by Trump’s Chief of Staff, General John Kelly, where he lists things he thinks should be sacred. General Kelly was trying to defend President Trump after he allegedly told a pregnant military widow that “this is what he signed up for,” in regards to her now deceased husband.
I also discuss the recent strong repudiation of Trump’s divisive right-wing nativism by former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, along with Senator John McCain.

Am I My Brother's Keeper?

During this episode I’m joined by callers as we analyze the age old biblical question, “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” I explains how Democrats usually answer yes, and Republicans usually answer no. One prime example of this is healthcare policy in America.
